My First Valentine
Though she had always been busy even on weekends, we managed to stay in touch through nightly chat over the telephone. Gradually, I was able to convince her to be open about our relationship. She wasn't sure about it but she agreed. Soon, we were again seen together never far from each other. Then it was Valentine and for the first time in my almost 30 years of existence I understood the meaning of the special day. It was espcially meaningful to a first-timer like me. I didn't know what to expect or to do. Well, at least I had the common sense to buy her a stalk of rose and to bring her to dinner. I remembered meeting her in town and the whole place was filled with couples, both young and old. She looked so different in her light blue dress (she usually wears jeans and T-shirt) while I wore my pink long-sleeved shirt with matching grey pants. I had not expected such a crowd and didn't make any restaurant reservation. We walked towards Clarke Quay and ended up in a pizza restaurant near Funan Centre. It didn't have a conducive ambience but it was better than dining at roadside stalls. We had pizza and some other Italian dishes which we didn't really enjoyed. After dinner, we strolled down to Singapore River to admire the skyline. It felt good to have the sea breeze blowing into our faces while we held hands and whispered to each other. That was my first Valentine. A very memorable one for me but not so for her espcially after she compared her special night to those of her friends who obviously had a more romantic night. Well, I was never born a romantic guy and is still not one, nobody is perfect, remember. But somehow after that night, she began to .........................
